Submitted by Sergio Rodriguez
As of 9 a.m. this date the rebuilding of both bridges in Stirrup Key has been completed. The City of Marathon completed it’s final inspection and gave its final approval and all traffic lanes on both bridges are open for traffic. We are contemplating painting the walls of the two bridges and we will be having a discussion and looking for input at our annual SKHOA meeting

Phase one of the project to reconstruct the two bridges will be completed by Monday November 13, 2017. One of the two halves of each bridge will be finished and ready to accommodate vehicular traffic. By the end of day on that date the traffic flows which we have been adhering to will be changing and traffic will be routed onto the newly completed spans off the bridges and construction will start on the other half of each of the bridges. All Stirrup Key residents are urged to pay strict attention to the traffic control signs and particularly to the posted speed limit of 5 MPH through each of the two contraction sites.

The work on the rebuilding of our two bridges was progressing nicely through August and early September and then mother nature imposed her will on us. As we can all imagine hurricane Irma brought all of the work to a screeching halt and getting back on track has been slow for all of the obvious reasons. Over the past two weeks work resumed, to the point where the steel forms are in place for the cement to be poured for the first half of the supporting piers on the bridge next to the Teget’s house. As of this week (10/2/2017) the current weather pattern over south Florida and the Keys is dumping significant amounts of rain, once again bringing the work to a halt. Additionally, we are currently experiencing significant high tides and will be getting king tides starting this Friday 10/6/2017), preventing us from completing the excavation and forming the steel for the supporting piers on the bridge next to the boat ramp. We are unfortunately at the mercy of mother nature and work will resume once the weather pattern returns to normal.

On Monday August 21, 2017, the work will begin on our bridges rebuilding project and we will begin to see construction equipment and related supplies along the easements of the roadway.  The SKHOA is urging all residents to drive especially careful and watch your speed as you approach the construction sites and follow the drive lanes as designated by the barricades that will be in place.

On August 7, 2017, the city of Marathon building department advised Mark Dennis that the permit for the renovation of our two bridges was approved and ready to be picked up.  This week, Mark will be gathering the equipment and supplies necessary for the commencement of the demolition and we should see some of these items delivered shortly, including the barricades that will be needed to manage and control traffic flow. We should all start to see an increase in the construction activity in the coming few weeks.

As part of their oversight of our permit application the City of Marathon building department had forwarded our application to the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to determine whether that entity would have any mandate or requirements over our project. The Army has responded that provided the work is done in accordance with the drawings we have submitted with the application, a Department of the Army will not be required. They did however forward our information to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary as well as to the USCG to determine whether either one of those agencies require any further review. Consequently, we are awaiting feedback to determine when we can proceed with the first phase of the project.

Mark Dennis met with the city of Marathon building department for a status on the building permit. The permit has been accepted by the public utilities and the fire department and as of 7/11/2017 sits on chief building official John Woodson’s desk for final approval. Mark Dennis will contact Woodson by 7/14/2017 to find out whether the final approval has been granted.

The City of Marathon forwarded the permit application to the Marathon fire chief for comments. The fire chief requested the specs and calculations used to determine the load bearing capacities of the two bridges. The information was provided to the fire chief by Jim Mangold. We are now waiting on any additional requests or feedback from the city building department.

Additional information will be posted on this site as it becomes available

The design phase of the bridge project has been completed and I, on behalf of our entire community, would like to thank Jim Mangold for his dedication and hard work towards producing the necessary calculations and engineering drawings that we required in order to apply for building permits.  We are now in the permitting stage of the project and are awaiting feedback from the City of Marathon on our permit application.  On behalf of the SKHOA, I would also like to thank Mark Dennis for all of his work towards preparing and submitting the permit application.  Additional updates about this project will be posted on this web site as they become available.

Check back for updates on the bridge project.
